Study in Contrasts VIETNAM HANOI
The butterfly picture started it all. It strikes me that in a quickly
changing world (and where else more quickly than the third world) there are many
examples of contrasts co-existing. Whether it's old and new, hard
and soft, big and small, I want to explore contrast in image.
A new building next to Kim Lien Pagoda with the Sheraton in the background... From Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum: New, modern and grand with old style,
simple housing in the background.
Also at Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, just outside the museum: People in
traditional hill tribe garb (probably on their way to a 'cultural exhibit' or
something) with modern tourists.
HUE
In Hue, at the Citadel, the old wall is across the moat from the newer
residences.
CA NA
We went to the top of the stairs to enjoy the view and were invited in to
partake in their ceremony. It was very beautiful to visit Religion at the
top of the stairs, and to find the gas station at the bottom of the stairs...
CAMBODIA PHNOM PENH
In Phnom Penh, at the Royal Palace, the Napoleon III building's European
architecture contrasts with the Khmer architecture, as do the colors.
The quality is also in contradiction, though it doesn't show in the
picture too well, with the bricks and painted glass of the Napoleon
building not matching up to the refinement of the other.
Beautiful Girl, Bald Monk. Modern Dress, Ancient Attire.
New(s) Paper, Old building.
The little kid just to the right kept trying to play "kick the plastic
birdie with washers on it like it's a hackey sack" with the big boys. He
was too small for them. The guy with the white shirt just picked him up
and put him outside the circle.
Sorry, I just couldn't leave it alone.... SIEM REAP
On the boat trip to Siem Reap, I thought the wealth of the church
compared nicely with the poverty of the people.
In Siem Reap, we found this fantastic Hotel, which I understand has
rooms in the range of $500 a night. This is in stark contrast to
the $6 a night we're paying at the Savy Guesthouse.
Walking around the streets of Siem Reap, the live cows next to the
elephant statues were entertaining. TEMPLES OF ANGKOR
Inside Angkor Thom, in the nine hundred year old Bayon temple, this guy
was busy phoning home on the latest in mobile technology.
Angkor Wat seems a little like a strange backdrop for a new tractor. LAO PAKSE
White monks in Lao? Seemed strange to me, particularly as they just
walked right by their local counterparts. In all fairness, it would seem
to me that a westerner that went out of his way to travel to SE Asia
to study Buddhism is probably more dedicated than the average local.
Locals (men) are required by tradition to become a monk for a minimum of
3 days so their parents can die peacefully.... PHONGSALY Burning wood to stay warm while translating economic statistics on the
computer.
