Savannakhet
Savannakhet Province, Lao

November 8 - 11 & 16 - 19

We came to Savannakhet (Savan) to see friends, and had a great time both around town and on our side trip to Pakse.

Our friends Theung and Sytho. Theung is the guy in both pictures. He has recently opened a school locally, the Savan Institute of Management. We spent a couple evenings there teaching English. If you are passing through town, please consider stopping in and sharing an evening of your time for teaching.

The first night we got to town we went to have dinner down on the Mekong. The sunset was fantastic, the food was OK.

Local scenery in Savan. The funny looking birds with the floppy yellow ears, some side streets, an ad for a local beverage, the Dinosaur Museum (tiny but very cool). Finally, the place with the giant legumes: for Doris.

We visited the local Tat Ing Hang, which had some interesting features. The surrounding wall is lined with Buddha statues on the inside, and the overhang is supported by ornate decorations. The Tat itself has some interesting, unique (and fairly whimsical) carvings such as the mouths. When people arrive at the Tat to worship, offerings are made in the form of beautifully folded leaves with flowers, and incense is lit to honor ancestors.

One of the interesting things about Tat Ing Hang is that women are not allowed inside. I understand that inside the temple are fairly graphic carvings of men with erections. I also chose not to go in, simply out of apathy. After Siem Reap I'm fairly templed out, and I don't really need an anatomy lesson.
