SMALL TOWN

So we went to visit a small town outside of Shanghai a ways while killing some time. Imaging cramming Bellingham into 5 Km^2, taking away public works, and throwing a bunch of dirt at it. Now make it hot and muggy. It was actually a fairly pleasant time... amazing what good people can do.

We checked into a hotel, and I had to appreciate the local attitude towards smoking...

Main street Small town

I went for a bit of a walk about to snap a few shots. I tried to find the beauty where I could, and just some interesting stuff. People spoke a very heavy dialect, that was a bit difficult to understand, but smiles are good. I managed to find my way around pretty well. In a small town of 50,000 or so, a foreigner makes quite a stir. I hadn't really prepared for that before my walk. Rickshaw drivers all wanted to give me a ride, school children followed me down the street, keeping a wary and safe distance. White people are a bit disconcerting, and a little bit scary I suppose. The middle aged and older shop keepers mostly just stared, some hollered out a "Hello!" after I'd passed and couldn't determine who it was. Safer that way I guess. God forbid, I might actually respond in English and all they really know is the one word. One venturous soul was kind enough to show me where the temporary Post Office was while the current one is being refurbished.
